Zverev Battles Auger-Aliassime in ATP World Tour Finals Match
Preamble
The inherent challenges of group stage tennis often result in at this point of the ATP World Tour Finals we’re often left confused, searching around for a computing device and striving to determine the mind-boggling permutations of qualification. However this evening's contest between Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, mercifully, is straightforward. It's a direct elimination: the victor sets up a final four matchup against Carlos Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the defeated player heads out.
Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the world No 3 is the more experienced competitor, has previously won at this event twice before and is ahead in their direct encounters with six victories against three defeats, having won both their past encounters on an indoor hard court.
Yet … this type of playing field on which Auger-Aliassime has claimed the bulk of his trophies, he is full of confidence after his remarkable turnaround against Ben Shelton on midweek and he eliminated the German in the US Open early stage in August. Furthermore, the playing speed is higher in Turin than at Flushing Meadows, which is even more beneficial in Auger-Aliassime's favor.
If the German player is reserved, similar to his performance against the Italian, and the Canadian presses the European player with his effective service game and confident shots, it could well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the former prodigy who was once in line in front of Alcaraz and Sinner to take over from the tennis icons – who earns the dubious honour of competing with the top-ranked player the next day.
The match starts: at about 8.30pm local time, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
