US Authorities Report Apprehension in Foiled Year-End Bomb Plan Outside Los Angeles
Law enforcement officials declared on Monday that they had effectively disrupted a elaborate scheme to explode bombs at multiple facilities operated by two US-based businesses on New Year's Eve in the southern part of the state. This action followed the detainment of people associated with an radical group advocating for anti-system and anti-government beliefs.
Those Arrested Taken Into Custody During Isolated Practice
The four individuals were arrested last Friday in the Mojave Desert situated east of Los Angeles as they were allegedly practicing their planned strike. Prosecutors showed aerial monitoring video to journalists, which depicted the individuals moving a sizeable dark object to a workspace. Officials stressed that the detainments occurred prior to the suspects could assemble a operational bomb.
Names of the Accused Released
As per the public legal filing, the four suspects listed are Carroll, aged 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32 years old; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, who is 41. Each of them are said to be from the Los Angeles area.
Suspected Motive and Connections
Even though authorities did not explicitly describe a reason, they indicated the individuals are part of a splinter group known as the Turtle Island Liberation Front. The group according to documents calls for "laborers to rebel and fight back against capitalism," based on the court papers.
They face comprise conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a bomb. The government stated that more charges are expected in the weeks ahead.
Details of the Supposed "Operation Midnight Sun"
Authorities stated that one of the accused had drafted a step-by-step scheme last month to attack five or more commercial sites across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The intended sites were characterized as "Amazon-type" fulfillment hubs.
"The bomb plot was specific," a prosecutor said. "It contained a precise guide to construct explosive devices … and named numerous objectives across Orange County and Los Angeles."
Based on the investigation and court documents, the plan involved placing bags containing complex IEDs that were scheduled to be detonated simultaneously at midnight on New Year's Eve at several places. New Year's Eve was identified as an ideal time since the plan indicated "fireworks will be going off at this time so blast noises will be more difficult to be detected."
An eight-page handwritten plan, called "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," stated that further sites could be added. The locations were identified as premises and buildings owned by two different companies tied to operations involving commerce.
Long-term Plans and Materials Seized
Court documents also stated that two people in the group had planned future strikes focusing on ICE agents agents and cars with IEDs in 2026. One accused allegedly said that such strikes "would eliminate some and intimidate the rest of them."
These plans were allegedly talked over both at an physical assembly in Los Angeles and through an private digital platform.
Photos featured in the court documents depict a desert campsite with what investigators said were IED-construction components scattered on makeshift work surfaces.
Official documents notes that the suspects "carried bomb-making components to the location, among them assorted sizes of plastic pipes, believed to be an oxidizer, fuel, powdered charcoal, powdered sulfur, and material to be used as fuses, among others."
Instructions also included guidance on how to construct the explosives and how to not leave behind forensic clues that could be linked back to the group. The individuals had not long ago acquired chemical ingredients and other items, with acquisitions from major websites.
Operation and Aftermath
The FBI intervened last week while the group were rehearsing the strike in the desert near Twentynine Palms. "They possessed all the components they needed to build an working IED at that location," the attorney stated.
During executed search warrants, authorities allegedly located posters for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one suspect's home that demanded "Down with America", and "Death to ICE". At another accused's residence, police discovered a version of the detailed attack blueprint.
The individuals were taken into custody without incident. They were due to appear in court in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
