Combatants chuckle as they ride on the back of a pick-up truck, speeding by a line of nine corpses and moving towards the sinking African sunset.

"See such work. See this act of ethnic cleansing," a combatant exclaims.

He smiles as he turns the recording device on himself and his companion militiamen, their paramilitary identification visible: "The victims are all going to perish this way."

These individuals are rejoicing over a atrocity that aid workers fear resulted in the deaths of more than thousands of individuals in the African urban center of al-Fashir during October.

A City Cut Off from the Outside

Following their control of the urban area under blockade for nearly an extended period, from late summer the militia moved to consolidate its dominance and restrict the remaining civilian population.

Satellite images reveal that troops commenced to build a massive sand wall - a built-up earthen wall - encircling the boundaries of el-Fasher, sealing off access routes and preventing aid.

While the blockade escalated, 78 people were murdered in an militia strike on a place of worship on mid-September, while the United Nations said fifty-three further were murdered in drone and artillery bombardments on a makeshift community in fall.

Explicit Video Depicts Defenseless People Executed

In the early morning on October 26th the militia overwhelmed the remaining government strongholds and took control of the primary compound in the community, the headquarters of the Army Division, as the government forces withdrew.

One of the most disturbing videos to appear and examined revealed the consequences of a mass killing at a educational facility on the western of the urban area, where dozens dead bodies were seen scattered across the area.

An elderly individual wearing a traditional garment sat by himself amongst the bodies. The individual turned to gaze as a fighter equipped with a rifle proceeded down the stairs facing the victim. Raising his rifle, the gunman fired a one round at the individual, who fell to the ground lifeless.

"How come is this one yet alive," a fighter shouted. "Shoot this one."

Satellite images captured on late October indicated to confirm that killings were also performed on the streets of the city, based on a analysis published by the university analysis team.

An witness who provided testimony said he had seen "multiple of our kin getting executed - the victims were collected in a single location and all murdered."

Militia Commanders Try to Conduct Reputation Management

In the days that followed the killings, militia chief acknowledged that his troops had committed "atrocities" and said the incidents would be examined.

Among those arrested was subsequent to a report documenting his executions. Deliberately staged and modified video published on the militia's official Telegram platform depict the individual being taken into a cell at a prison on the perimeter of the city.

Meanwhile, the militia and associated online accounts began trying to alter the account.

Content depicting its combatants distributing aid to residents were disseminated by some individuals, while the force's media office released multiple clips claiming to show the compassionate management of army detainees.

Regardless of the online effort being employed by the paramilitary, their activities in el-Fasher have generated global outrage.
