Combatants chuckle as they ride on the back of a pick-up truck, speeding by a line of nine corpses and moving towards the sinking African sunset.

"See such work. See this act of ethnic cleansing," a combatant exclaims.

He smiles as he turns the recording device on himself and his companion militiamen, their paramilitary identification visible: "The victims are all going to perish this way."

These individuals are rejoicing over a atrocity that aid workers fear resulted in the deaths of more than thousands of individuals in the African urban center of al-Fashir during October.

A City Cut Off from the Outside

Following their control of the urban area under blockade for nearly an extended period, from late summer the militia moved to consolidate its dominance and restrict the remaining civilian population.
