Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories After Player Arrests
Miami scored 86 first-half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball match since guard Terry Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was additionally arrested as part of a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up 86 opening half points to lead Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
The commissioner also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
