Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for making hard hits on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' remarkable comeback victory over the Giants. Payton remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
