Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers During Eviction Procedure in Italy

Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people were hurt in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast was triggered as police and firefighters went into the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed served in the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene revealed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the residence was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the property, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He was convinced the explosion had happened on a floor above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to Italian media, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
