Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
The economist commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and eagerly await tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails showed that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' decision to depart.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the company stated.
Political Context
This development follows after the two houses of Congress voted on Tuesday to approve a measure that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.
The bill will subsequently proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has indicated he expects to sign the bill, after modifying his view on the subject following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the Congressional committee recently referenced several high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails indicated that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the general audience, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to restore trust and fix relationships with the persons most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the policy organization, a progressive think tank in Washington where he was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was ceased to be associated with the institution.
He entered the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
