England's Assistant Coach Explains His Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry competed in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach win the World Cup next summer. The road from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he established a standing with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach enabling us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Working every hour day and night, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. The approach involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms such as "break".

“It's not time off or a break,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself and Tuchel as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We have 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We have to play an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. It’s to take it from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are focusing to speed up play across those 24 metres.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. While training for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns regarding the final talk, as his cohort included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations imaginable to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He completed the course with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Frank was one of those impressed and he recruited the coach on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, within months, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
