Correctional Facilities Cannot Be Resolved Overnight, Minister Says, while Law Enforcement Search For Two Individuals Mistakenly Released
Shadow justice secretary the shadow minister has labeled the circumstances as a "total shambles," speaking this morning.
Speaking during a radio program, he pointed to remarks made by the justice minister following a recent prisoner release, stating that the minister would implement stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of almost a week for the corrections department supposedly to realize this occurred" and notify the police, Jenrick says, "leaving them a week late in the search to find him."
The opposition figure condemns the minister's performance during recent parliamentary questions and accuses him of a "complete failure in responsibility."
Addressing mistaken inmate discharges more generally, Jenrick underlines that "every single mistaken discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He admits there were similar incidents under the former Conservative government, but says the number "has increased dramatically" under Labour.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be constructed, he continues: "What the British people expect now are proper checks put in place."
"This represents a specific administrative failure by the justice department supervised by the minister," the opposition member says.
